The set of principles, devised by science fiction author Isaac Asimov, are designed as a safety measure for autonomous machines. These guidelines, introduced in his stories, dictate a hierarchy of priorities intended to ensure robots serve humanity. They are a cornerstone of his fictional robot stories, influencing both the narrative and the ethical considerations presented within them. For example, a robot must not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm; must obey orders given by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law; and must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
